Earth Day is a global movement to raise awareness of environmental issues. This movement began on April 22, 1970 when Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin Senator, took the initiative to encourage youth to become aware of the environment in their community. Thanks to Mr. Nelson and this first environmental movement, several laws and programs have been put in place for the environment. Among others, the US Environmental Protection Agency, whose mission is to protect the natural environment and human health, came into being at the end of 1970. It was in 1990 that Earth Day has taken on a global scale. In fact, 141 countries and more than 200 million citizens took part in the events.

Earth Day has allowed many events to take place. For example, in 2012, thousands of people took the streets of Montreal to build a human tree.

On the occasion of Earth Day, the famous Paris Agreement on Climate was signed in 2016 by several influential countries, including China and the United States. This agreement has several objectives, including the containment of global warming well below 2 ° C and the reduction of fossil fuels.

Earth Day is a movement of great importance. Indeed, we all know how the environment is a global issue. In fact, the resources are over-exploited, humans release a lot of pollutants into the air, water and soil and some ecosystems are being degraded. It is high time that all citizens develop an ecological awareness. The environment is everyone's business, and we must act at all levels to save our precious Earth.
